2027 TROPICAL 7s FORMAT UPDATE

TAMPA, FL: The TROPICAL 7s has announced a major format change for 2027, with the tournament set to expand from its traditional two-day schedule to a new four-day event format, running from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th March 2027.

An expanded competition schedule will not only enhance the team experience and create dedicated age-relevant competition days but will also help the tournament better meet a growing demand for places

The change will be introduced as part of the tournament’s 10-year anniversary edition and marks an important new chapter in the continued growth of one of the world’s leading international youth rugby festivals.

TOURNAMENT EXPANSION

Under the new format, different age groups will compete across dedicated competition windows, creating a more focused and age-relevant experience while also enhancing the competition and venue experience for both teams and spectators.

Competition dates for each age group are as follows:

  • U12, U14 and U16 divisions: Thursday/Friday 25-26 March 2027

  • U18 divisions: Friday/Saturday 26-27 March 2027

  • U23 and Senior divisions: Saturday/Sunday 27-28 March 2027

  • Training sessions: Available from Wednesday 24 March to Friday 26 March 2027

The new format will also support increased capacity in several of the tournament’s highest-demand age groups, helping the event better respond to strong interest in places while maintaining a high-quality competition environment. In addition, new Open divisions for Senior Men and Senior Women will be introduced for 2027, broadening opportunities for participation at the senior level and further strengthening the tournament’s offering across the age-grade pathway.

The move to a four-day format is expected to deliver a stronger overall event experience, with a less congested competition schedule and improved access to existing venue facilities such as parking, toilets, and team tent space. By creating dedicated age-group competition windows, organisers will be able to provide a more tailored and age-appropriate experience for players, coaches, and supporters. The new structure will help preserve the high standard of delivery, energy and festival experience that teams have come to expect from the TROPICAL 7s.

“Reaching our 10-year anniversary gave us a natural moment to reflect on where the tournament has come from and where we want to take it next. We felt 2027 was the right time to introduce a format that not only supports future growth, but also strengthens the experience for the community who make Tropical 7s what it is.” said John Siner, Executive Director for Tropical Rugby.

“Tropical 7s has never been about standing still. We have always looked for ways to raise the standard of the event while staying true to the atmosphere and identity that teams value. This new format is a big step in that direction and reflects the ambition we have for the tournament over the next 10 years.”

Since its launch in 2017, the TROPICAL 7s has grown into a major destination event on the rugby calendar, attracting 230+ teams from across the United States, the wider Americas, and around the world. The 2027 edition will combine that established international appeal with a new competition format designed to support the next stage of the tournament’s development.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF TROPICAL 7s

The 2027 edition will also mark the 10th anniversary of the TROPICAL 7s, an important milestone in the tournament’s journey. Since its launch in 2017, the event has grown into one of the world’s leading international rugby festivals, and plans are already underway to make next year’s edition a special celebration of that achievement. A number of anniversary initiatives, activations, and surprises are being developed to mark the occasion both on and off the field. Further details will be released over the coming months as we build towards this major milestone and prepare to celebrate 10 years of TROPICAL 7s.

EARLY-BIRD TEAM REGISTRATION FEE

To support teams who plan early and in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Tropical 7s, an Early Bird rate of $925 per team will be available for the first 10 weeks of registration (until 24th July 2026). After this date, the 2027 registration fee is $995 per team. We remain committed to keeping Tropical 7s a top-tier global event and a premier rugby experience for all participants, while continuing to explore ways to help keep overall trip costs down through our partnerships with accommodation, travel and tourism partners.

A number of important registration and administration changes for 2027 have been introduced:

  • Teams wishing to enter any Elite division will require a registration code before registering. Teams entering Elite divisions may be asked to provide additional information to support their inclusion.

  • Important deadlines will move earlier, including close of registration (19 February 2027) and team/player compliance requirements (26 February 2027)

  • Updated team withdrawal policy with a 50% refund before 01 January, and no refund thereafter. Any team withdrawing within four weeks of the tournament may risk participation in the same division the following year.

  • Division numbers will be capped and a waitlist system will be in place once a division is full.

With a milestone anniversary year ahead, the 2027 TROPICAL 7s promises to be one of the most exciting editions in the event’s history.
