TROPICAL 7s is excited to announce that former South African Springbok and Sky Sports television commentator, Thinus Delport, has been appointed as coach-in-residence for the 2017 TROPICAL 7s tournament.
Thinus will be amongst the top international coaches available to conduct training sessions with teams participating in the TROPICAL 7s, as well as supporting the athlete skills testing and Coach Education session.
Thinus is a former wing and fullback who played for Gloucester, the Worcester Warriors and earned 18 senior caps for the South Africa national team. He started his professional rugby career playing Super 12 rugby with the Johannesburg Lions and Durban Sharks before moving to the UK in 2002 where he made over 100 appearances for English Premiership sides Gloucester Rugby & Worcester Warriors.
After retiring from the professional game as player in 2010, Thinus remains heavily involved within rugby as both a coach and pundit for Sky Sports in the UK. He holds an RFU level 2 coaching licence and was previously Head Coach for National League 1 side in England. He currently plays for the South Africa Legends and is a regular member of the J9 Legends team at the Dubai Sevens. Thinus also serves as an ambassador to a number of rugby charities including Rugby for Heroes as well as the J9 Foundation.
Thinus joins TROPICAL 7s under the coaching and development partnership with RDJ Sports Development. Participating teams at this Easter’s Tropical 7s tournament will be able to benefit directly from Thinus’ extensive rugby experience and receive customised coaching sessions from him and our other international coaches.
Richard de Jager, Managing Director of RDJ Sports Development, commented: "Thinus has played at the highest levels in the game of rugby and now brings his extensive knowledge and experience into the coaching arena. Having coached alongside Thinus, he is an excellent communicator and motivator and will be able to get the best out of any team whatever their level."
